A Life in Leverage

O’ Theophilus,

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 1:1, ESV).

I have much to write to you. I have been meditating on many things, and I wish to bring you into them. However, I refrain at present, for much is transpiring in my life.

The last several weeks have not been the easiest for me, O’ Theophilus. This life can be painful, but the Lord has graciously given me purpose in it, regardless of circumstance. Everything that happens, no matter how difficult or painful, can be used for the advance of Christ’s gospel. In Colossians, Paul makes this point, as he writes from a jail cell. He is a follower of the Messiah well acquainted with hardship. He writes, “At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison…” (Col. 4:3, ESV). While in prison, Paul seeks the prayers of the faithful, not for his release, but rather that, where he is and in the condition he finds himself, he may have the opportunity to declare the good news of Jesus to others.

Instead of bowing out in helplessness and defeat, Paul leverages his circumstances for the spread of the gospel. He chooses to use his circumstances for God, rather than blame God for his circumstances. For Paul, his service to Christ meant everything, and everything that happened in Paul’s life became an avenue and tool through which Christ was proclaimed.

I do not know where you find yourself, dear Theophulius. I do not know what circumstances you face, what pain you might be experiencing, what evil you might be suffering from, what happiness you might be walking in, or what good thing might have come your way. Whatever you walk through, with, and in, leverage it for the gospel. This is our duty, for we serve a Heavenly master (Col. 4:1). Let your life reflect the new life you have been resurrected to, and let it serve to advance God’s kingdom and message to others.

Grace be with you,

caleb
